Coal has shaped Ramgarh’s economy for generations, this study looks at what comes next for the coal economy – specific to districts context. Drawing on fieldwork across 22 villages including farmers, women’s groups, youth, and local officials, it identifies six practical livelihood alternatives: fisheries in reclaimed mine pits, goat and poultry rearing, tourism around Rajrappa and Patratu, agro-processing, and skills training. Alongside these, the report lays out financing routes through DMFT and CSR, the governance structures needed to make it work, and the policy changes required to turn coal-dependent communities into thriving, diversified economies.
