Blueprint

Scalable and sustainable development through a multidisciplinary, whole-of-society approach.

The progress or development of one aspect of rural life is by its nature limited. But even the integrated development of a single village isn’t enough to bring equal opportunities to rural India.

Why?

Because there are too many overlapping reasons behind an inequitable society. That’s why impactful rural development needs to look at every aspect of society. It needs a thoughtful approach that results in multidimensional change through localised action that also brings public and private ecosystems into play. And then it needs to scale up.

Development Design

A TRI-focal approach to establishing synergistic relationships between the state (sarkaar), private sector (bazaar) and communities (samaaj).

This whole-of-society engagement addresses the need for scalable solutions and models by involving three key players: the state, the market, and the communities. The goal is to pilot and refine ideas on the ground, learning from practical experience and then scale them up to a larger level.

This approach drives change by engaging the community and local governing bodies. The change is driven by community aspirations – tapping into their agency. The pilot programs implemented in collaboration with the community lead to evidence-based policymaking that ensure effective acceptance and make development available in every last village.

Our team of specialists lead and support the state in every stage of the program – from planning to designing, rolling out, monitoring and adaptive management. Our effort is to create an enabling environment for large-scale community-centred transformation.

The three pillars of the TRI-focal approach
1

Community | Unlocking
Community Power

Once the community gets involved, the numbers and level of participation rises. We engage local influencers who have the trust of the community to influence the changes we seek and are passionate about change.

Changes are implemented through our Community Action Labs (CAL). They are live labs of active experimentation for prototyping and solutioning – implementing ideas on-the-ground. These prototypes are held at a block level and only after rigorous evidence of efficacy are crafted for large-scale adoption.

2

Government | Establishing
Effective Public Systems

Impoverished India is the most dependent on public services to survive. However, the delivery of public services is either inadequately supported by manpower, poorly overseen or inefficiently delivered. This results in the program having limited to no impact on the intended beneficiaries.

Through our Public Policy in Action (PPiA) engagement, we strive to create a responsive public ecosystem. We partner with the government to help create relevant policy to shape the most urgent needs of the community and also improve the delivery of its programs. Our trained specialists work with local administrations to identify bottlenecks, set up enabling or nudge units and find solutions to meet the aspirations of the local community.

3

Marketplace | Exploring
Market Innovation

Stranded India, even if producing goods and services, has no access to a market. There is a genuine struggle to find buyers and grow to ambitious levels.

The Bending Markets for Flourishing Localities (BMFL) approach aims to improve the demand and supply interlock by mobilising resources and talent from within and outside the area. We strive to attract market players to co-locate and provide goods and services, ensuring fair participation of rural households in larger markets and attracting investment in the rural economy.

Development Practice

Our multi-disciplinary approach addresses critical dimensions of life: Health & Nutrition, Primary Education, Income Prosperity, Water & Sanitation, Local Governance and Gender Equity.

This is the foundation for a quality of life that is healthy, well-nourished, educated, skilled and economically productive. Action across multiple development indicators can irreversibly uplift rural India out of deprivation leading to generations of prosperity.

Stories from the field

Rekha was from one of the poorest families in her village. But she opted to become a vector for change. She is now the torchbearer for learning in her village, because she has personally motivated at least thirty students to turn up at the local learning centre everyday to augment their classroom learning.
